A compact high-performance BMW sports car was already causing heads to turn and hearts to flutter over 40 years ago. Indeed, the BMW 2002 turbo perfectly encapsulated BMW's resolution to deliver outstanding dynamics, exceptional agility and optimum car control. As if to demonstrate in similarly resounding style that this commitment is alive and well, BMW M GmbH can now unveil the new BMW M2. With its high-performance six-cylinder in-line engine, rear-wheel-drive agility, lightweight aluminium M Sport suspension and extrovert styling, the new BMW M2 Coupe has all the ingredients to deliver the last word in driving pleasure.

Characteristic M design

A single glance is all it takes to pick the new BMW M2 Coupe out as a member of the BMW M family, with its styling also keen to advertise its dynamic attributes. Inspired by models from the history of BMW in motor racing, the new M2 Coupe makes no secret of its extraordinary performance potential. The low front apron with large air intakes, muscular flanks with characteristic M gills, 19-inch aluminium wheels in familiar M double-spoke design and low, wide rear with M-specific twin-tailpipe exhaust system all play impressive roles here. The time-honoured character of BMW M cars is also present and correct in the design of the interior. The Alcantara of the door cards and center console together with porous carbon fiber creates an ambience of rare quality and heady sporting ambition further underlined by blue contrast stitching and M embossing on selected details. Sports seats, an M sports steering wheel and an M gearshift lever ensure BMW M2 drivers are in perfect command of their car it at all times.

One of the main contributors to the extraordinary dynamic experience on board the new BMW M2 is the optimised exhaust with special flap system. With its four tailpipes, the exhaust system immediately marks the BMW M2 out as a BMW M model and its minimal exhaust back-pressure ensures perfect engine cycles. Added to which, the electrically controlled flap delivers the distinctive BMW M engine soundtrack across the entire rev range without pushing volume levels to their stipulated limits. In addition, drivers can use the Driving Experience Control switch to select a driving mode and a preconfigured sound to go with it.

Analyse your own driving style, film racing laps

The optional ConnectedDrive Services open up the world of vehicle connectivity to customers, revealing intelligent services and features as well as an extensive range of apps. The GoPro app is a case in point, likewise the M Laptimer app from BMW M GmbH, which drivers can use to improve their driving style on the track precisely as required. This application records the car's speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, engine speed, the gear engaged at any one time, the steering angle, the accelerator position and fuel consumption. All this allows drivers to subsequently analyse their responses precisely corner by corner, gives them the option of comparing their laps with those of other drivers and enables them to share the data by e-mail or Facebook.

The GoPro app allows drivers to use a GoPro camera to film fast laps of the race track, for example. BMW ConnectedDrive paves the way for all applications to be integrated seamlessly into the car. They can be operated using the iDrive Touch Controller and viewed in the Control Display.

Yet enthusiasts have sent a message to BMW: Keep your mitts off our M3. This is the holy of holies, the sport sedan like no other. Those fans can breathe easy, as easy as the 2015 M3 (and the newly named M4 Coupe) rushes ahead with its new 425-horsepower 3-liter twin-turbo in-line 6.

The previous M3, with a 4-liter naturally aspirated V8, howled to 414 peak horsepower. But with just 295 pound-feet of torque, it was like the high-strung friend who is wild and fun, but often exhausting.

Despite that, some fans have feigned outrage that the M3 and M4 share an identical downsized 3-liter engine block, though little else, with the conventional 3 Series sedan or 4 Series coupe and convertible. In their orthodoxy, every molecule of the engine should trace to the company’s M performance division.

 Black 19-inch alloy wheels seem a must for $1,200, a sinister coup de grâce on these already aggressive-looking bodies. An adaptive M suspension with settings from soft to stiff is also worth the $1,000 upgrade.

 The new M4 is powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight six engine that puts out 425bhp and 406lb ft

 The convertible weighs 1,839 kilograms (4,055 lb), 41 kilograms (90 lb) less than its predecessor. The three-piece retractable hardtop folds in 20 seconds.

But such critics may have missed the auto industry’s message: Downsized, turbocharged engines not only seem inevitable, but they are also unbeatable for their combination of torque and fuel economy. Not only does BMW’s new twin-turbo engine generate 406 pound-feet of torque — remarkably, 111 more than before — but it’s at your service at any engine speed from 1,800 to 5,500 r.p.m.

The engine delivers a surprisingly basso rumble for its size and configuration, but as with many turbo mills, it still sounds relatively muffled and distant.

 This is M division’s variant of BMW’s two-door 3-series, hitherto called the M3. The original M3, the E30 of 1985, was a homologation car created to allow BMW to go Group A touring car racing.

Cavernous air inlets and BMW’s aero-enhancing air curtains dominate the front view, along with a “power dome” hood bulge and lovely exterior mirrors perched on slender dual stalks. A rear diffuser and quad exhaust pipes jut from the rear. A carbon-fiber roof shelters both models, with the M4’s specially shaped carbon-fiber trunk lid adding extra downforce.

 On a backwoods tour of the Catskill Mountains, the M4’s superlative power, balance and brakes made a rousing argument: This is the rare four-seater that truly belongs on a track, including the Nürburgring in Germany, where engineers honed its reflexes. When the rear tires finally break loose around curves, a light flick of countersteer brings the body back into line.

TWO NEW CATERHAM MODELS TO BE ANNOUNCED

Colin Chapman would be proud to see how far his iconic Seven has come. He, along with his team at Lotus, built the original Seven from 1957 to 1972 and sold the rights to Caterham in 1973.Caterham’s newest version stays true to the original formula.

According to a release issued by Caterham on Aug. 13, two new models are to be introduced by Caterham in Monterey this weekend: the Seven 480 and the 360. Under the bonnet is the featherweight aluminum 2.0L Ford four cylinder. The 480 model has 237 hp that can jump to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds while on the way to a 140 mph top speed. For a less aggressive launch, the 360 offers 180 hp and 4.9 seconds to reach 62 mph.

30th Anniversary BMW M5 Edition

When it debuted in the mid-1980s, the E28 BMW M5 was known as the fastest production sedan in the world. The current F10 M5 is certainly no slouch either, and for its 30th birthday, it will get a power bump to nearly 600 horses. 

Thirty years of producing the same car is quite the milestone — and while it's gone through many changes, the heart and soul of the M5, as a powerful business-class sedan, has remained pretty much intact. In recognition of this anniversary, BMW have announced a limited edition run of the BMW 30 Jahre M5. Based on the current model, this one boasts some significant performance enhancements including a bump up to 600 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful M5 ever made. Limited to just 300 units, this M5 will be available to reserve starting at the end of May.

Some leaked details on the 30th Anniversary Edition M5, and it sounds like some proper German rocket sedan hotness. They say the car's twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 will get bumped from 560 horsepower up to 592, and torque gets a mild boost up to 516 pound-feet. P

It's a far cry from the first M5, which debuted at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1984 and had 282 horsepower in Euro-spec trim from its race-derived 3.5-liter inline six.

Other goodies include the Competition Package, 20-inch jet black wheels, frozen dark silver metallic paint, leather and Alcantara all over the damn place, and a 30th anniversary badge. P

A sad note for manual purists, though: this special M5 will reportedly only come with the dual-clutch transmission. That's kind of a bummer, but the DCT is pretty excellent.

BMW Zagato Coupe

Rekindling a partnership that dates back over 50 years, the BMW Zagato Coupe ($TBA) wears its Italian design heritage proudly. Details are scant on this shapely coupe, which features Zagato "z" letters in the signature kidney grille, 19-inch alloy wheels that recall propellers, and a double-bubble roof. We can only guess that it's based on the Z4 roadster, but it doesn't really matter, as this is the only one that exists.

The Mini Ad

One of the selling points for Mini Cooper Clubman – the Mini that is roomier yet still cute — is that it has room for some luggage. The Clubman’s luggage compartment measures 9.2 cubic feet (the basic Mini has only 6 cubic feet) and has a cargo cover as standard equipment. Clubman’s split-folding back seats can be lowered to increase the cargo space to 32.8 cubic feet that will accommodate not just basic luggage but even a snowboard or baby stroller.

Art director Maximilian Pinegger and copywriter Justin Salice-Stephan, two 24-year-old's from Miami Ad School took this feature to hart and created a cute airport luggage carousel guerrilla ad for the car and its roomy trunk. It might be on its way out, but if so, it's doing so in style. The Aston Martin DBS Ultimate ($TBA) represents the, ahem, ultimate version of Aston Martin's speedy two-door, featuring the same 510hp V12 as the standard model, but adding a ton of classy upgrades like special badging, carbon fiber wing mirrors, a darkened front grille, black tail pipes, diamond-quilted stitching in the cabin, alcantara headlining, yellow, red, or black brake calipers, leather-trimmed gear paddles, a manual or automatic transmission, a coupe or Volante (convertible) body, and your choice of three colors: Carbon Black II, Quantum Silver, or Silver Fox.

Not content to let its coupe-y siblings have all the M-Powered fun, the new BMW M135i ($TBA) packs some serious power into a compact hatchback package. Available in three- and five-door versions,  a host of high-tech safety features like adaptive headlights, a rear view camera, and a lane-departure warning system, BMW Assist, a model-specific exterior and interior design, a longer, wider, and more spacious body, M-grade suspension components, your choice of six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions, and optional xDrive all-wheel drive.

The M135i is powered by a 320 hp straight-six TwinPower Turbo engine.

COLOUR ONE for MINI by Scholten & Baijings

We always get to see the final product. We buy it, consume it but rarely do we ever see or question the process of its composition. The INTERNI Legacy exhibition staged by the renowned Italian design magazine INTERNI presented MINI as one of the main protagonists with the design installation COLOUR ONE for MINI by the Dutch designers Scholten & Baijings at the Cortile del 700 of Milan University (Università degli Studi di Milano). The installation comprised a MINI ONE which had been deconstructed down to the last single component to further investigate and explore every aspect of its design. Through this process, they were able to reveal the essence of each part and began giving new meaning to each component in order to put it back together. Using color, texture and new materials, they began giving the MINI ONE an entirely fresh perspective to car design.

 Holten & Baijings gave each component a new autonomy and began treating each as its own unit, creating a diverse and rich vocabulary to the collection of parts. Pieces such as the transparent tires made of cast resin, which were produced in collaboration with industrial designer Vincent de Rijk were reworked. Working through the car's history and cultural value, the designers added further special components such as the seats and seat belts, bags integrated into the frame and a sun visor that doubles as a clutch; these elements not only speak about the car features but also augment the process as a cultural narrative of our mobility. The MINI ONE is a product of its past, present and future.

Has this project and process perhaps sparked a new methodology to car design and customization? Fresh thinking always comes from the cultivation of dialogue between brands and external designers. Fostering such a dialogue is not only a nutritional benefit to the brand but adds a competitive advantage in the market.

Porsche Supersport: Carrera 4S-Based Super 911 Coming Next Year?

Our source with ties to Stuttgart tells us next year to expect a limited edition Porsche 911C4S-based widebody Supersport, complete with duck-tail spoiler and double bubble roof.

This rumor, may be loosely confirmed by a second source — if we're counting aTeamSpeed forum post stating the same bits of information we've received. While not as hardcore as the GT3 or GT3 RS, the Carrera Supersport will retain the same C4S-based widebody, but will be considered a grand touring car rather more so than the aforementioned brightly colored track rats. We currently know that it will feature Fuchs-style wheels, a double bubble roof, a ducktail spoiler and will feature a primer gray colored paint job. The interior will feature a retro throwback brown leather interior.

No power numbers have been given at this point, but we can expect the very limited edition Supersport will empty your wallet by about £135,000 ($222,223 USD). We're lazy fixing our plumbing problems, so expect more information as it leaks out over the next couple months.
