The First Generation of Kindle or kindle 1 was released only for United States on November 19, 2007. The response from the market was overwhelming as Kindle was sold out within 5 and half hours and it remained out of stock for about 5 months. It comes with 6 inch wide grayscale display with 250 MB of hard drive. The first launch was confined to United States due to problems signing up with suitable international wireless network operators.
Amazon Kindle 2 became available in the market on February 23, 2009 with some significant added features from that of the First Generation. Kindle 2 supports a text-to-speech function. It is slimmer in design with faster refresh rates and contains a 2 GB hard drive of which 1.4 GB is user accessible. The international version of Kindle 2 was made available on October 19, 2009, which works in over 100 countries. At this time around Amazon introduced another version of Kindle known as Kindle DX which has a 9.7 inch E Ink screen instead of the 6 inch normal Kindle screen.
Again, there was an upgrade of the Kindle DX which is the latest Generation of Kindle DX that has an E Ink Pearl screen with 50% better resolution than the previous version.
Amazon announced Kindle 3, the latest generation of kindle on July 28, 2010. Though Amazon did not officially add the number “3”, it became to be famously known as “Kindle 3”. The latest generation is available in two versions using the latest connectivity technologies – kindle Wi-Fi and Kindle Wi-Fi + 3G. Kindle 3 uses the new E Ink Pearl for display screen for both the models and claimed to have 50% better resolution than Amazon Kindle 2.
Now, what are available in the market for purchase are the latest Generation of Kindle and Kindle DX (latest Generation). While considering which kindle to buy, take into account the connectivity type with the two versions of kindle 3.
